The magic of marble…

We think marble is a very special material, one might even go as far as to call it magic… The power of marble lays in its chameleon like nature;  as much at home in an opulent hotel lobby as it is in a severely minimalist gallery space, it is both bold and subtle. Marble has the ability to hold the entire focus of a space or to be simply a quiet accent, but whatever else marble is or can be, there is one thing that is sure, it never fails to look effortlessly expensive. It has associations of nobility and tradition, used for centuries to carve the likeness of kings and gods alike. The images in this post are all so unmistakably marble, yet every single one features a distinctly different pattern, almost like finger prints every marble is different.

Large slabs of white marble line the walls inside the Tapestry Museum by CVDB architects, elegant yet all encompassing of the space. The architects explained their material choice as needing to replicate the noble character of the building. This detail of the stairs in the El Camino Residence, San Francisco shows the beautiful symbiosis between the grains of wood and marble. As instantly recognisable as marble is it is equally versatile, it’s got a personality, it can be clean and modern or ornate and traditional. We love it when it’s dark and sultry, as in this Armani Hotel in Milan, where the grain is strikingly stripy and in this beautiful bathroom vanity where we wouldn’t mind doing a bit of late night pampering. Now you know how much we love a bit of monochrome… but theres nothing to say that marble has to be mono… stylist Jessica Hanson paired it with powdery coloured walls and furniture  to beautiful effect. And on a recent trip to The Gallery at Sketch, designed by Future and Found favourite David Shrigley, we were wowed by the beautiful herringbone marble floor… ok the food was pretty good too!And it would be rude talk about marble without indulging a few inspirational bathrooms… and these ones are serious showstoppers! Fancy a soak in that beauty? don’t mind if we do…
